SENSE OF PLACE AND USE OF PUBLIC SPACES

it goes to a square or a street in the center the question arises: public spaces are used equally by all citizens? There have been changes in the use of these places as a result of immigration in recent years? We tried to ask directly to the people who live in Udine, through interviews with small "native" and foreign. From the opinions received, it appears that the liveability of public spaces has a greater emphasis on daily life for women than for men, perhaps because the former have a much closer relationship with the environment in which they live, where they spend more time doing tasks that are largely related to management of the family.
We classified people into two categories: "local" (native, born in Udine or from regions around Udine in Udine and established a long time) and the "new arrivals" (coming from countries not belonging to the European Community). There are many issues common to both categories. The most nominated include the lack of respect for public places and the indifference shown by many on what is happening in these areas. Squares and gardens are frequented by the locals like the immigrants, but they see little change in the management of these places in the behavior of those who attended. However, most people interviewed confirmed that they satisfied and happy to live in the capital of Friuli.
Regarding the perception of security, much depends on the location, but there are surprises. The station area known to be considered the most "unsafe" is seen by some people but as a popular and lively: "The comparison with others is the identity of a person and a city," says the director of the Municipal Library of Udine, Romano Vecchiet. "It 's nice to see this multi-ethnicity, because it means that the city is alive. Dealing everyday with people in these spaces for different culture and background, to understand that things change and we must strive to ensure a quiet and peaceful coexistence of all citizens. "
We often hear about the papers of vandalism, fraud and other offenses, but as Paul says, are the same media that transmit disturbing news about what's happening in public areas, and this does nothing but increase the sense of insecurity. The reason for this emphasis on the negative factors do not know how to explain but it certainly does not help to give more confidence and safety to those who live in these places.
also concerned about the trend, the news media, to blame everything that happens to the "foreigner". Not only is the emphasis on the behavior of a few uncivilized forgetting the education of all others, but they tend to declare their nationality of origin, if it were a distinctive and directly related to the offense was committed.
The problems of coexistence, although present in public places, there are even more strictly in private, when they are just neighbors. Of a certain unease as we talked to Mrs. Donald, Udine Doc and middle-aged, living with some difficulty the presence of so many foreigners not only in public areas, but also when he returns home.
decidedly more positive comments collected from people who recently arrived in Udine, be it a migrant worker or a college student.
The newcomers declare enough happy with their condition and think that Udine is a peaceful and pleasant city to live. A positive result, this was also confirmed by the opinions of many Albanian citizens. He also reflect very different perceptions in terms of security: non-EU citizens in general are good in any part of the city without any distinction. Even on services, used to like the other residents, the judgments are always based on the maximum positivity. "No problem, use any means and I go to public places without difficulty - says Mrs. Drita, Albania -. I feel peaceful, secure and integrated, so you think you believe that even my family. "
Younger women, especially students, seem to live with a certain fear less open places, such as parks with big trees, the station area and some side streets of Udine. These places bring a certain anxiety and insecurity for the young especially during the night. "I prefer the streets full of people to feel safer - explained Isis, aged 20."
Well, it seems that Udine is seen as a "paradise" for many Albanian citizens, feel at home now, because for some Udine has become their home, and not just a bridge en route to other countries but a city to integrate and live well with everyone. Udine The Doc seems to have a little ' less ready to give an opinion enthusiastically of their city, but there have been the opinions of many who said they feel safe and secure and now see the presence of foreigners as a matter of course and routine. Finally there is to say that every citizen of "native" or "newcomer" to explore the place where he lives, must relate to others in these public spaces. And 'only in this way, we imagine, will form a view, therefore, not on the basis of mere hearsay, but based on personal experience. The quality of life in the streets and open spaces is a necessary condition for a company may rely on a high degree of coexistence.
The brief interviews that we conducted through the streets of our city, do not intend to play no role in statistics, it could be otherwise. Yet they still get the testimony of a way if possible less common than it reads on many media, to address sensitive issues of what is basically the integration and peaceful coexistence among people of different cultures often distant, but share the desire to improve the quality of their lives.
